Crime stats are out for 2008, and while it appears violent crimes are down in the twin cities compared to 2007, property crimes are up.

In Bryan, police investigated four murders in 2007 and 2008. Seven more sexual assaults were reported in 2008, while police investigated three more robberies.

Burglaries are up three percent, theft up two percent and vehicle thefts are up a whopping 41percent. Also, police investigated five more arsons than in 2007.

In College Station, zero murders were reported in 2008, compared to one in 2007. Meanwhile, 10 more sexual assaults were reported in 2008.

Robberies are up 18 percent, burglaries up 24 percent, theft up 16 percent and 11 more vehicle thefts were reported in 2008.

Both departments reported an increase in calls for service. Bryan police attribute this to better community contact and communication between police and residents.

The Bryan Police Department released this press release Tuesday:

The Bryan Police Department's preliminary UCR report
Bryan Police Department

The UCR program is administered at the state level by the Texas Department of Public Safety and at the national level by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. These agencies collect and analyze data concerning index crimes in order to determine state and national trends in crime. The index crimes used in the UCR program include: murder/manslaughter, sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, theft, auto theft, and arson.

The Bryan Police Department received 83,915 calls for service in 2008. This number represents an increase of approximately 1,100 calls for service above what the Police Department received in 2007. The increase in calls for service was anticipated as a result of increased community contact and improved communications between the citizens of Bryan and the Police Department. The Police Department also recorded a 2% increase in total reported Uniform Crime Report (UCR) Part I crime in the City of Bryan during 2008. This 2% increase equates to approximately 103 more offenses reported to the Police Department than was reported in 2007.

In 2008, Chief Morrow started two programs to make the City of Bryan the safest City in the Great State of Texas. The Neighborhood Enforcement Team (N.E.T.) was launched and tasked with utilizing problem-oriented policing strategies to resolve the issues of crime, fear of crime, disorder, and decay affecting the quality of life in Bryan. The N.E.T. strives to build partnerships with Bryan residents, business owners, and religious leaders to foster better community involvement in problem solving. Chief Morrow also launched the Intelligence Unit to specifically target those individuals considered habitual offenders and who represent the greatest threat to community safety. The Intelligence Unit gathers information received from citizens, offense reports, and arrests reports. This information is gathered and shared with officers from the Bryan Police Department as well as other law enforcement agencies.

The Bryan Police Department anticipated a higher number of offenses due to the partnership with our citizens, which encourages them to report crimes. It is through the partnership with the Citizens of Bryan and the Police Department that the numbers did not increase as substantially as had been anticipated. This achievement is due in part to our success in removing habitual offenders from the streets.

There were four (4) murders and zero (0) negligent manslaughter cases reported in 2008. This number did not increase or decrease from 2007.

There was a 21% increase in reported sexual assault offenses in 2008. The 2007 UCR data reflects thirty-four (34) sexual assaults as compared to forty-one (41) reported in 2008. The Bryan Police Department has initiated a crime prevention and education program to address these types of offenses. For more information contact Sgt. Robert Smith with the Training Division at 979-209-5363 and ask about SHARP training.

There was a 3% increase in the number of reported robbery offenses in 2006. Department records for 2007 reflect ninety-seven (97) reported robberies as compared to the one hundred (100) reported in 2008. The Bryan Police Department has initiated a criminal; intelligence program to help identify and apprehend individuals involved in robbery. A crime prevention and education program to address these types of offenses is available for local business owners. For more information about crime prevention programs contact Sgt. Demond Oliver with the Neighborhood Enforcement Team at 979-209-5539.

Reported burglary offenses increased by 3% in 2008. One thousand (1,000) burglaries were reported in 2007, and One thousand and twenty-nine (1,029) were reported in 2008. The Bryan Police Department has initiated a criminal; intelligence program to help identify and apprehend individuals involved in burglary. A crime prevention and education program to address these types of offenses is available for local business owners and home owners. For more information about crime prevention programs contact Sgt. Demond Oliver with the Neighborhood Enforcement Team at 979-209-5539.

There was a 2% increase in the number of reported theft offenses in 2008. Records for 2007 reflect two thousand, four hundred and four (2,404) reported thefts in 2007 as compared to two thousand, four hundred and forty one (2,441) reported thefts in 2008. A crime prevention and education program to address these types of offenses is available for local business owners and home owners. For more information about crime prevention programs contact Sgt. Demond Oliver with the Neighborhood Enforcement Team at 979-209-5539.

There was a 41% increase in the number of reported motor vehicle theft offenses in 2008. Department records for 2008 reflect one hundred and ninety-five (195) reported motor vehicle thefts as compared to one hundred and thirty-eight (138) reported in 2007. A crime prevention and education program to address these types of offenses is available for local business and home owners. For more information about crime prevention programs contact Sgt. Demond Oliver with the Neighborhood Enforcement Team at 979-209-5539.

There was a 44% increase in reported arson cases in 2008. Records for 2008 reflect thirteen (13) reported arsons as compared to eight (8) reported in 2007. This increase reflects the Bryan Fire Department's continued commitment to aggressively investigate and identify cases of arson within the community.
