A common problem in learning how to mix a record is learning how to deal with bass. Always seems like you got too much or too little. It can lead to hundreds of attempts on the same song.

I saw an interview with Buck. He pointed out that, in the 60s, he wanted to have his records sound loud on the radio. His advice was don't overdue the bass and the overall track will sound louder.

I remembered a specific time as a kid, riding around town with my Dad and "Tiger By The Tail" came on the car radio. It was like it jumped out of the speakers. Because of that, it was the first country song that ever blew my skirt up. I'm talking like four years old here.

Anyway, back to this interview with Buck...he demonstrated his mixing process. He brought the bass up first! He said; "Watch your overall VU meter. Bring the bass up by itself and don't let it take up more than 25% of the meter. Then, mix the rest of the track around it".

Next day, I got to the studio and tried this trick on a couple of demos (songwriting demos we were pitching to Nashville) that were giving me mixing fits. Booyallakkah! It was like magic dust. Totally fixed the problem.

Now, it isn't a formula that I employ. There is no formula-every track is a different animal. But, Buck Owens helped me gain some crucial yardage in the football field full of bad mixes you got to go through before you start consistently doing some good ones and, for that alone I am grateful.

Not to mention all of the great songs, Don Rich, "Buckaroo", "Most Dangerous Band", Nudie suits etc...........

My cousin Chris and I got into the make-up and girls closet when we were a bit older than tykes. Dressed up like our Moms and walked to the corner store and back. It was Dion "The Wanderer" DaNucci, whose music blew our skirts up.
We got a lickin' when the peeps caught us sneaking in the back, too.
Cross dressing, what a gas. Luv ya Pribes.

Buck and Roy...that sound out of those little speakers...chill bumps.
My buddy Roy called me one summer night and said " You gotta see this new flick. I'll be by to git ya in a minute."
We ended up at the Thunderbird Drive-In on Clay Rd. about midnight. Only a few cars there to see "Woodstock". We pulled his VW bus into the empty middle, went around and turned on all of the little speakers, got out a couple of lawn chairs, cracked open the first of several Falstaffs and went to New York for the rest of the morning.

...the point being, those speakers we grew up with were so important to us. Fragile to bass but capable of melody and lyrics. We knew the words to songs. Partly because we listened to the 45 twelve to thirteen hundred times each and partly because of the little tinny speakers. Owwt!

Hey, my two favorite Palikir's conversing on ... our blog.. it is a stellar day in my flow.

Sister Sylvia dressed me up in her dress and wig one time, at about eight or nine years old; she said I was prettier than most girls... Dad got furious, but held his temper... and only used his five wood on me butt... his one wood was the killer; I was grateful.

Thanks Dave for softening Dad up to the tranny in us all... I had almost forgotten that Chris episode. And Roy is a good Palikir; see if you can find him in cyber-scope..? eh? and Susan... the painter? ...remember Carole King vinyl spinning non-stop in those days.. too?

Pribek you graced our unlearned hall of BS with the most eloquent of discussions. I have often thought that your music has a Hee Haw, Buckaroo, Crosby Still Nash swerve to it... but of course we don't pin any formula to you... it is what it is.. four years old eh? You are a prodigy then?

and Today is Vinnie's b-day, to boot.

We only drop in to keep them, at Googley Squat, from shutting off the power. Loves ya, me Brudder

Thanks again for that... i have only undying manic-paced, leisuretronic, hail-storm pupillary dilation's for you cherished commentators...

this final word on Buck Owens... I like it from the article Pribek pointed out:

"Buck needed Don [Rich]. Don took care of the band, schedules, personnel, instruments, arraignments, and so many day to day things it would blow your mind. A reporter once heard Bonnie say to Don, "I know it's a weird arrangement for me, but it's weird for you too, we are both like Buck's wives, I'm married to someone else and you're a guy".
The fact is, Buck was strong but insecure in many areas, and Don was his rock. Gay? NO! Dependent? Yes! Best friends? No, the real dynamic duo! Don was killed on his motorcycle leaving a recording session, on the way to Moro Bay, CA. to be with his wife and family for a few days of rest. He was killed July 17, 1974. Buck was told by the California Highway Patrol, and he cried."
