Facebook set for profit as members reach 300mFacebook, the social networking site founded by a Harvard University student in 2004, claims to be on the brink of finally making a profit.

Mr Zuckerberg said the website had added 100m members in the last six months alone Photo: AP Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's founder and chief executive, said the website now has more than 300m members and is collecting more revenue than it spends on maintaining the site. "Facebook now serves 300m people across the world. It's a large number, but the way we think about this is that we're just getting started on our goal of connecting everyone," Mr Zuckerberg said in a blog on the company's official Facebook page.
"Earlier this year, we said we expected to be cash flow positive sometime in 2010, and I'm pleased to share that we achieved this milestone last quarter. This is important to us because it sets Facebook up to be a strong, independent service for the long term." Mr Zuckerberg said the website, which is facing increasing competition from newer rivals, such as Twitter, had added 100m members in the last six months alone.
Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook's chief operating officer, said she expects revenue to grow by about 70pc in 2009. The company makes money from advertising on the site and collects commission from third-party applications sold through the website.
