Congressional leaders to NASA: Houston deserved shuttle, not New York | khou.com | khou.com Local News

This is an Election Year coming Up, Uh Huh!

"Politics should never play a part in a decision about a piece of American history. Today, I’m afraid, politics trumped [that keyword would have to qualify as one point for Donald Trump, eh?] ... common sense," Bob Mitchell, of the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership said. (LINK)
"I think politics will get in the way," said Mike Sullivan, Houston City Council Member "This is an election year coming up, and I hate to say it, but I’m afraid that the shuttles are going to go somewhere else." (LINK)

Anger, disbelief in Houston over NASA space shuttle decision
Houston, we have a problem: Space City snubbed in bid to land retired shuttle
HOUSTON — Congressional leaders on Wednesday sent a letter to NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, demanding to know why New York City was chosen over Houston as the home of a retired space shuttle. Members of the Texas delegation in Washington, D.C., said they may demand additional congressional inquiries and hearings, depending on the answer they get.

NASA has Spoke
HOUSTON -- The decision by NASA to not bring a retired space shuttle to Houston was met near Johnson Space Center with anger, disbelief and questions about the economic impact the decision would have on the region.

"It's unbelievable," said Frankie Camera, owner of the famed Frenchie's Italian Restaurant, which has served generations of astronauts. "This is very sad news."

A retired space shuttle at Space Center Houston would have generated an estimated $45 million for the region annually and created as many as 700 jobs.

Audrey Dillon, a tourist from Orchard Park, New York, said a shuttle belonged in Houston.

"Everything is here," she said. "Why would you put it someplace else?"

Houston, we have a problem.

HOUSTON – The prototype Enterprise, which is currently housed at the Smithsonian, will be moved to the Intrepid Museum in New York City.

Bolden made the announcement from the Kennedy Space Center, during a ceremony marking the 30th anniversary of the first space shuttle flight and the 50th anniversary of man’s first journey into space.

Locally, another crowd had gathered in front of Space Center Houston’s shuttle mockup to hear the news. When they did, some of them burst into tears.

"I just, I get very emotional about this place, because I’ve been here since we opened," Space Center Houston employee Angela Case said.

"I don’t understand why politics had to be a part of it, and it hurts," Space Center Houston visitor Diane Brenner said.

Houston Mayor Annise Parker, the first ever 'Openly Gay Lesbian Mayor' ... issued a statement in the moments after the announcement was made, saying she was disappointed about the decision.
"This is certainly disappointing, but not entirely unexpected as the Administration has been hinting that Houston would not be a winner in this political competition. I am disappointed for Houston, the JSC family and the survivors of the Columbia and Challenger missions who paid the ultimate price for the advancement of space exploration. There was no other city with our history of human space flight or more deserving of a retiring orbiter. It is unfortunate that political calculations have prevailed in the final decision," Parker said. (Reece, Kevin. 12 April 2011. HERE)
