MooPig Movie Reviews: Guilty Pleasures -- "Under Siege [1992]"

Definitions of Guilty Pleasure
by Pat Darnell
  - From the Guild: "Action movies are a form of subconscious communion. We partake of the hero’s courage and emerge feeling more courageous ourselves." (- From the Guild [HERE])
" ... My interpretation of “Guilty Pleasure” is something you know is utter crap but you can’t help enjoying it. As far as I am concerned Escape From New York and Point Break are good films.

The fallout from Waterworld resulted in a great quote from Kevin Reynolds: “Kevin Costner should only act in movies he directs. That way, he can work with his favorite actor and director.”
(Ahi. Says: November 12, 2009.)
"I think I like more movies that count as guilty pleasures than good films, but my number one has to be Highlander. Only the first movie, as the sequels and show were horrible. But the first one had some great lines, a good villain, a Scottish Egyptian, a Belgian Scott, and (like Flash Gordon) a soundtrack by Queen. What more could you ask for?"
" ... Ahi, Good call on Highlander, how did Sean Connery deliver the line with a straight face when he had to ask what haggis was? Simple he didn’t try to. And how did he cope with an Egyptian accent? Simple he just didn’t bother trying. (fandangogroovers. Says: November 12, 2009. HERE) ... "

MooPig's failing is its guilty pleasure derived in the showdown of villain 'Strannix,' played by Tommy Lee Jones -- and the hero, 'Ryback,' played by Steven Seagal in Under Siege [from 1992]. It somehow is the best ending we have seen for a villain due his come-up-ance. In the last scenes, tough guy, special forces 'Ryback' and rogue special agent 'Strannix'dance around the battleship Missouri's pilot deck, until it ends with Ryback putting his thumb in Strannix's eye, planting a knife in his head and shoving Strannix head-first through a radar screen.

"Thumb in the eye, knife in the head, and shoved head-first through a radar screen ... about does it for MooPig."

Under Siege is a bit different in Seagal saga -- here are some Wiki notes:
  • The movie was also a critical success, with many hailing Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey as the villains. Rotten Tomatoes currently has a 74% fresh rating on the film.
  • After watching this film, Harrison Ford was so impressed by Andrew Davis' directing work that he immediately signed on to play 'Dr. Richard Kimble' in Davis' adaptation of The Fugitive.
  • Also, the film was nominated for two Academy Awards -- 'Best Sound Effects Editing' and for 'Best Sound.'
  • Cast note -- George H. W. Bush as Himself in Under Siege

What happens to Tommy Lee's character in that movie is one of the greatest movie villain deaths of all time! So gratuitous! So sadistic! So awesome! So unsung!
